Innocent couple killed in police chase crash
January 29th, 2010An innocent couple have been killed when their car was involved in a collision with a vehicle being chased by police.
The husband and wife were trapped in the car, which burst into flames when a Ford Mondeo being pursued by the police crashed into the back of their Chevrolet car.
Both victims were declared dead at the scene. The driver of the Mondeo escaped the collision unscathed.
According to reports, the 31-year-old man was caught jumping a set of red traffic lights at a busy road junction in Reading, Berkshire, before being pursued at speed by traffic officers in a marked motorway patrol car.
Despite the two police officers sounding their sirens and turning on their blue lights, the driver refused to stop and accelerated away in his Ford Mondeo.
A police spokesman said: “A patrolling police vehicle saw a Ford Mondeo car drive through a red traffic signal at the junction of Castle Hill and the Tilehurst Road in Reading. Following the illumination of blue lights on the police vehicle the Mondeo accelerated away.
“A short distance later, at the junction with Western Elms Avenue, the Mondeo collided with the rear of a small hatchback car which had been travelling in the same direction, resulting in the death at the scene of the occupants, a local man and his wife.”
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is now investigating the incident. Meanwhile the driver of the Mondeo remains in police custody.
