Police officer hurt in blast

January 8th, 2010

An officer with the Police Service of Northern Ireland has been taken to hospital after a bomb reportedly exploded under his vehicle in County Antrim.

The man, who is Roman Catholic, has been taken to hospital in a serious condition following the blast at around 6.30am.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, according to reports from the BBC.

An ongoing security alert is in place at the scene of the explosion on Milltown Road in Randalstown. The road has been closed and army technical officers have been called to the scene.

The chairman of the Northern Ireland Policing Board, Barry Gilligan, described the attack as “an attempt to murder”.

He added that those behind it “cannot be allowed to succeed in bringing any further terror” to Northern Ireland and urged anyone with information about the incident to pass it to the police.
